2.3 SPAIN – Murcia

Playa Carolina, Aguilas

SAT 8 OCT 2016

After leaving Denia we left the A7 at Lorca onto the C3211, an excellent road over the Sierra de la Almenara mountains to Aguilas. The wild camping area at Playa Carolina was very busy, but after after a ‘difference of opinion’ on where to park, we managed to find a spot with a good view of the sea and Aguilas beyond. We had a drink in the beach bar, then met Dave and Ann Marie, who we first met here earlier this year. After eating we went over to their van for a chat and drinks.

We had a meal in the beach bar around 5:00 pm, clams in garlic sauce (Jane), swordfish (Alan), followed by a few drinks with Dave and Ann Marie before the beach bar closed.

MON 10 OCT 2016

After breakfast outside, beach all day, Alan snorkelled out to the small rocky island off Playa Carolina.

THUR 13 OCT 2016

Much colder, breakfast inside, cloudy. Drove to services then on to Aguilas, took Dave and Ann Marie, and parked on the harbour front, then had lunch in Placa de Espana.

Menu of the day, very good value at €9.50 for salad + choice of 1st course + choice of 2nd course + coffee + desert. After lunch we had a short walk round part of the town. Sunny and warm when we returned to Playa Carolina. Bob had saved us a space, we sat outside Bob and Cheryl’s van, a 7m Rapido A-class, and chatted, Bob kindly provided a couple of cold beers and white wine.

Sunny and warm agan, Bob and Cheryl left, heading south. Beach all day, Alan snorkelled first N to Playa de Higuerica again, then S, past the rocky point, where a spectacular sight emerged, as a large shoal of large fish tightly packet together rose up from deep water twisting and turning. We ended the day with a meal in the beach bar with Dave and Ann Marie.

SUN 16 OCT 2016

Sunny and warm, as we said goodbye to Dave and Ann Marie, as they headed S to Villaricos and beyond, planning on returning to England on 23 Dec. Sad to see them go, but very nice to have met up again. Beach and swimming all day, good surf in the afternoon, a bit rough for snorkelling, but good fun in the waves. MON 17 OCT 2016

Left Playa Carolina after 9 nights, our longest stay of the trip so far. Stopped at the local garage for services, washed the van for €1, then called in to Mercadona supermarket, breakfast in the car park, away by 9:30 am, early for us! Heading inland across Spain with the intention of crossing the Pyrenees via the Somport tunnel.
